It is believed that Brazilians are one of the most superstitious people in the world. Brazilians in general believe in rituals and talismans and the beliefs are already so naturalized in the culture that one does not even wonder where they came from and why they exist.
A few days into the new year, I thought it would be interesting to post some superstitions and rituals for new year’s eve in case you want to give it a go.
The change from year to year is, by itself, a magical event. In a fraction of a second we finish one year and start another, making resolutions to become a better person and renewing our hopes for a better life.
Add to that moment some potions of enchantment can bring more positive energy and, who knows, even help fulfill some dreams. Making some rituals can be fun and it will not hurt, right? So, why not try?
Brazilian rituals for the new year’s eve range from what you eat and drink to what you bathe to what you wear, depending on what you are wishing for.
Starting the new year on the right foot, to ensure good luck for the year ahead, is the first rule.
To leave negative energy behind, have a shower or bath with coarse salt in water at room temperature, always from the shoulders down without wetting the head, as it carries the crown chakra, our connection with the divine energy. Prepare your mind for this moment, try to relax, keeping only good and positive thoughts, forgetting possible problems or bad memories. You can rinse yourself afterwards with running water. Don’t do it if you have high blood pressure.
To attract good energy and keep bad energy away, have a bath or shower with the water infused with herbs such as rosemary, basil and mint mixed with coarse salt.
To have financial prosperity, on new year’s eve, eat pomegranate, set aside its seeds, wait until they dry and keep three of them in your wallet. If you want to double your chances of a prosperous financial year, make sure to eat at least one table spoon of green lentils on that night.
Jump seven ocean waves making a wish for each of the waves you jumped. Don’t turn your back to the sea when leaving the water to make your way back. Yep, you should walk backwards whilst facing the waves.
Last, but not least, the colours of what you wear symbolise your wish for the year ahead.
First of all, never wear any black piece of cloth. Never! Black, in this case, symbolises bad luck.
It’s a big part of the Brazilian culture to wear all white to the New Year’s celebrations. The white represents the wish for peace, peace of mind and purification. And it can’t be that old garment you have sitting on your closet. It has to be something new to bring you new good vibes in the new year.
You may prefer to choose another new garment colour instead of white as you might be wishing for different things in your life. Another idea is to wear a colourful underwear underneath your white garment. Here is a quick guide of main colours and their meanings.
I like to play with this belief of colour meanings and mixing more than one colour together or wear a printed garment that has a range of colours, as most of the time I can’t pick just one wish. Is it cheating?? I don’t think so. Well, I wasn’t told this wasn’t allowed. lol
If you are considering to give it a go, our BossaModa store has a range of white clothes you might like.
However, if you are like me and can’t choose a single wish, you will find here a wide range of prints that might feature all the colours that represents your wishes in a single piece. Clever hey!? 😉
We wish you a very happy New Year and may all your wishes come true!
